Talking Points to Consider:
We need a new hospitals system:
Windsor-Essex’s acute care hospital infrastructure is nearing the end of its useful life. The current facilities are outdated, undersized, and can’t accommodate patient needs.
Medical floors and emergency departments fall below provincial standards – and cramped patient rooms and crowded hallways mean that effective infection control is difficult to achieve.
Most buildings are more than 50 years old – and can no longer be retrofitted or renovated to meet modern standards.
There’s an ambitious plan:
From a new state-of-the-art acute care hospital to a new centre of Mental Health Excellence, there’s an ambitious plan for a modern Windsor-Essex hospitals system.
A new hospitals system will mean that patients will no longer need to be transported by ambulance between campuses for urgent and acute care
It will include a real regional trauma centre with air ambulance capability, at least 80% private rooms to facilitate modern infection control, and the infrastructure to support high-tech imaging and diagnostic technology that improves patient care and outcomes.
It can help mount an economic comeback:
From making the region an attractive destination for investment, to ensuring our workforce has the healthcare they need to stay healthy and productive – there’s a lot at stake for our region and our economy.
According to a recent KPMG report, the construction of a modern hospitals system will generate more than 11,600 full-time equivalent jobs in Ontario and contribute over $1.57 billion to Ontario's GDP.
